This resin chess set epitomises the struggles for domination between Christians and Muslims.
This chess set is available in plain resin and is also available skillfully
hand-decorated, as illustrated.
In each instance the pieces represent the Christian side led by King Richard I of
England, known as Richard the Lionheart, in combat with the Muslims led by
Saladin.
This chess set concentrates particularly on the Third Great Crusade led by Richard I
who, in 1189, joined King Phillip II of France in an effort to recapture the holy city of
Jerusalem. With 8000 troops they seized Cyprus and some other cities on the
Palestinian coast, but ultimately failed to dislodge the Muslim leader, Saladin, from
Jerusalem.
In each instance the King Height is 5¼" and the sets are suitable for boards with a
square size of 2 inches.
